The Role of Sleep in Managing Depression and Anxiety: Tips for Better Rest

Getting a good night’s sleep is an important aspect of managing our mental well-being. A poor night’s rest can negatively impact both physical and mental health. When struggling with depression and anxiety, it is critical to get the proper amount of sleep - especially good sleep! Sleep helps reset the body and allows us to function better in our day-to-day lives. The truth is we spend almost one third of our lives asleep, so it’s important to take it seriously. See below for some quick tips for better rest. These are all tips I practice myself - and I wouldn’t recommend them unless I thought they really help!

Be consistent

We’ve all been there before: staying up a bit past our bedtimes, ‘doom scrolling’ on our phones or binging Netflix. Occasionally this is okay, but a consistent bedtime is much better for our well-being. An inconsistent sleep schedule can negatively affect your rest and ultimately your physical and mental health.

 Invest in comfortable bedding

This is a personal favorite tip of mine. It may sound frivolous, but having the proper pillows, comforter and sheets can make a major difference in the quality of your sleep. Be aware of what you like in a pillow - whether it's soft or firm, or what kind of sheets you like against your skin, whether they are linen, flannel or cotton. Prioritizing your bedspace affirms how important sleep is and being physically comfortable will promote a good night’s rest.

Clear your mind

Try not to go to bed stressed. Bringing your worries of the day to bed with you isn’t going to lead to a restful, calm sleep.Try doing a breathing exercise or a simple meditation practice before you head to sleep.

Create a bedtime ritual

This may be the most important tip of all. Creating a ritual before bedtime can help you wind down and signal your body that it is time to rest. If you’ve stayed in a hotel before, you might be familiar with the term ‘turndown service’. This usually involves a hotel staff member dimming the lights of your room, fluffing your bedding, sometimes even leaving a little chocolate on your pillow. I really enjoy creating my own sort of turndown service. Crafting your own turndown service doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be as simple as creating atmospheric lighting, playing calm music or nature sounds and making yourself a cup of herbal tea before bed. Try it - you won’t regret it.

The impact of poor sleep can affect all areas of your life, especially your mental health. Getting healthy amounts of rest is key in managing depression and anxiety, and with these tips, it doesn’t have to be too hard.
